Daily Commentary

Friday, May 18         2:45 p.m.

Today........Eastern markets up big.  Weather, funds and export biz all helping provide some upward strength.  European and US wheat futures took another run up the board.  The frenetic trading week saw wheat futures rise 17.3%; the largest weekly rally since April 1996. Funds alone bought in 10,000 contracts. Technicals all pointed to coverage and length and the 'herd' obeyed.  At some point ,the pendulum will pause and take a 'corrective swing.' However, if crop chopping weather continues, the rally could have more legs.  Local cash market values went along for a more deliberate ride and posted new recent highs. New crop values starting to receive deserved country scrutiny.  The Scoular Company

Yesterday.............

The short covering rally continued into the overnight session. Wheat  futures led the parade. Domestic (southern US Plains) and global (FSU) weather issues had funds covering some of their 'burdensome' short positions; technical buzz points triggered buy stops. Similar action expected at today's opening bell.  The weekly  SWW export sales report showed Korea was the region's top buyers: 71,200 Mt old crop and 86,700 Mt for the new marketing year. Local SWW bids following the recent futures trend-line. Minor measurable country responses.  Wheat futures recorded their  fourth straight day of ascension.  Crop retarding dry weather in numerous production zones have funds reaching for cover. Along the way, technical bells sounded and addition buy stops were engaged. It's the 'best sustained rally' since January. The stock market action is the antithesis of today's perceived commodity strength. Some wags suggest a respite is in order before the next leg. Local soft white wheat prices have gained strength by association.  The Scoular Company
